Today Lucas is sixteen years old. He went to a regular school up until sixth grade. After that he started in a school for children with special needs. Like many parents of children with autism, we had dreamed that our son would overcome his diagnosis. Lucas still has autism, but despite this, he has matured and developed amazingly, and we're so proud of him. He is such a loving, kind, and generous individual, and if everyone were like him, the world would be a more peaceful place.
We have continued training with ABA, which laid the groundwork for his language and other skills. We have always included him in our life just as much as his siblings, and because of that he's used to many situations and has also developed independence. He rides his bike or takes the commuter train to school. He goes swimming, shopping, dines, and goes to the movies with friends.
In 2013 we moved to the United States. The transition has gone well, and Lucas is now attending school here and learning English. He has downloaded the Google Translate app on his iPhone and uses it frequently. His vocabulary is expanding, and it's incredible to see how he's able to cope in this new environment. He loves playing videogames and watching movies, often in English but also in Spanish! And then his iPhone app really comes in handy.
Recently, we got a Lab puppy named Titus, and the bond developing between them is wonderful to watch. Titus completely admires Lucas. It's adorable to see how happy he is when Lucas is around, and for his part, Lucas is learning a lot from the puppy, watching and interpreting his body language and connecting with him. Lucas's communication skills have improved even more, and it's so sweet seeing a deep relationship forming between them. I think Lucas will have a very loyal and loving companion for many years to come.
